Baccarat Guide 2026

Baccarat is the game of choice for high rollers and James Bond alike. Despite its sophisticated reputation, it's one of the simplest casino games to play and offers some of the best odds in the house. This guide covers the rules, card values, betting options, and strategies for both beginners and experienced players.

How Baccarat Works

Baccarat is a comparing card game between two hands: the Player and the Banker. Your role is simply to bet on which hand will have a total closest to 9, or whether they'll tie. You don't play the Player hand — it's just a name for one of the two sides.

Card Values

Aces count as 1. Cards 2–9 are face value. Tens and face cards (J, Q, K) count as 0. If a hand total exceeds 9, only the second digit counts (e.g., 15 becomes 5, 10 becomes 0).

Natural Wins

If either hand's first two cards total 8 or 9, it's called a "natural" and no more cards are drawn. A natural 9 beats a natural 8. If both sides have the same natural, it's a tie.

Third Card Rules

If neither hand has a natural, strict drawing rules determine whether a third card is dealt. The Player draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7. The Banker's third-card decision depends on the Player's third card.

Betting Options & House Edge

Baccarat offers three main bets. The Banker bet is mathematically the best choice despite the 5% commission on wins.

Third Card Drawing Rules

These rules are automatic — neither the player nor the dealer makes decisions. Understanding them helps you follow the action at live tables.

Player Rules

  • • Total 0–5: Player draws a third card
  • • Total 6–7: Player stands
  • • Total 8–9: Natural — no more cards

Banker Rules

  • • Total 0–2: Banker always draws
  • • Total 3: Draws unless Player's 3rd card is 8
  • • Total 4: Draws if Player's 3rd card is 2–7
  • • Total 5: Draws if Player's 3rd card is 4–7
  • • Total 6: Draws if Player's 3rd card is 6–7
  • • Total 7: Banker stands

Baccarat Strategies

Always Bet Banker

The most straightforward strategy. Since the Banker bet has the lowest house edge at 1.06%, consistently betting Banker minimizes the house advantage. Even with the 5% commission, it's statistically superior to the Player bet.

Avoid the Tie Bet

Despite the tempting 8:1 payout, the Tie bet carries a massive 14.36% house edge. Ties occur roughly once every 10 hands, but the payout doesn't compensate for the rarity. Serious baccarat players never touch this bet.

Flat Betting

Bet the same amount every hand regardless of wins or losses. This eliminates the risk of progressive betting systems and keeps your session predictable. Combined with the Banker bet, flat betting is the safest approach.

1-3-2-4 System

A positive progression system: bet 1 unit, then 3, then 2, then 4 after consecutive wins. Reset to 1 unit after any loss. This limits downside while capitalizing on winning streaks. Maximum risk is 2 units per cycle.
