Blackjack Guide 2026

Blackjack is the most widely played casino card game in the world and one of the few where skilled players can reduce the house edge to under 1%. This guide teaches you everything from card values and basic rules to optimal strategy and popular variations.

Card Values in Blackjack

Understanding card values is the foundation of blackjack. The goal is to get a hand total as close to 21 as possible without going over (busting).

How to Play Blackjack

1. Place Your Bet

Choose your chip value and place it in the betting circle before cards are dealt.

2. Receive Cards

You get two cards face up. The dealer gets one face up (upcard) and one face down (hole card).

3. Make Decisions

Based on your hand and the dealer's upcard, choose to Hit (take another card), Stand (keep your hand), Double Down (double your bet, take one card), Split (if you have a pair), or Surrender (forfeit half your bet).

4. Dealer Plays

After all players act, the dealer reveals the hole card and must hit on 16 or below and stand on 17 or above (rules vary on soft 17).

5. Compare Hands

If your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer's without busting, you win 1:1. Blackjack (Ace + 10-value) pays 3:2. Ties push (your bet is returned).

Basic Strategy Overview

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal play for every possible hand combination. It was developed through computer simulations of millions of hands. Following basic strategy reduces the house edge to approximately 0.5% — the lowest of any casino table game.

Hard Hands

Always stand on hard 17+. Hit on hard 11 or less. Double on hard 10 or 11 when you have more than the dealer's upcard. Hard 12–16 are the trickiest — generally stand against dealer 2–6 (dealer likely to bust) and hit against 7+.

Soft Hands

A soft hand contains an ace valued at 11. Always stand on soft 19+. Double soft 13–17 against dealer 5–6. Hit soft 17 or below when doubling isn't optimal. The ace's flexibility makes soft hands less risky to hit.

Splitting Pairs

Always split aces (two chances at 21) and eights (16 is the worst hand). Never split tens (20 is too strong) or fives (double instead on 10). Other pairs depend on the dealer's upcard.

Surrender

When available, late surrender lets you forfeit half your bet on bad hands. Surrender hard 16 against dealer 9, 10, or ace. Surrender hard 15 against a dealer 10. This saves money in the long run on the worst situations.

House Edge & Rule Variations

The house edge in blackjack varies significantly based on the specific rules at the table. Here's how different rules affect your odds:

RuleEffect on House Edge
Dealer stands on soft 17 (S17)−0.2% (better for player)
Blackjack pays 6:5 instead of 3:2+1.4% (much worse)
8 decks instead of single deck+0.5% (worse)
Double after split allowed (DAS)−0.13% (better)
Late surrender allowed−0.08% (better)
Re-splitting aces allowed−0.06% (better)

Popular Blackjack Variations

European Blackjack

Dealer receives only one card initially (no hole card). Double only on hard 9–11. Fewer decks for a slightly lower house edge.

Spanish 21

Uses a 48-card deck (no 10s). Compensates with bonus payouts for 21, late surrender, and doubling on any number of cards.

Blackjack Switch

Players receive two hands and can switch the top cards between them. Natural blackjack pays even money, and dealer 22 pushes against all non-bust hands.

Pontoon

The British variant where both dealer cards are face down. A 5-card hand under 21 (Five Card Charlie) beats everything except a natural pontoon.

Blackjack Tips

Learn basic strategy and use it every hand — this is the single most impactful thing you can do.

Avoid 6:5 blackjack tables. Always seek 3:2 payout tables.

Look for games where the dealer stands on soft 17 (S17).

Never take insurance unless you are an experienced card counter.

Set a loss limit and win target before you sit down.

Start with lower stakes to build confidence before increasing bets.
